While it only became apparent later on, we were very fortunate to have had depth at the pitcher and catcher positions.  Over the course of the season, five different players pitched and three different players played back catcher.

Our last regular tournament in Brampton was also our strongest showing as a team and individually with the team and players earning a few awards.  While we lost by one run against Brampton in the first game, our team never gave up to and by batting first, all our runs counted in the drop dead format.  In our second game Anika was our starting pitcher and she stepped up to pitch two long hard fought innings.  With the run support from her teammates, this crucial win over Mississauga put us into the playoffs.  During the skills contest all three Spartans represented Unionville well;

Jenna won gold for the furthest hit

Katrina won silver for throwing accuracy

Nicole won bronze for running the bases

Five players were returning as second year Squirt Spartans.

Jenna lead the team in hits, in cheers and kept her teammates upbeat by entertaining them as only she can.

Katie lead by example, showing the dedication required to succeed in practices and in games, whether by being the catcher, bunting or leading the duck walks.

Katrina let her play speak for her.  She hit 2 home runs in our Unionville tournament against the team that would eventually capture both the OSSTA and PWSA championships.  Her pitching shut down our opponents during her OSSTA championship appearance.

No player worked harder than Kristi this year.  She was called upon numerous times to play catcher in the heat, to make spectacular blocks and insisted upon playing an extra game, even though unbeknownst to our team, she was going to perform in a dance troupe for 5 more hours after the game.

Nicole earned the leadoff position with a team leading batting average and her base running speed and smarts.  There were times when she thought no one was looking, but the coaches caught her checking her grip and she showed her desire to play by asking to catch.

First year Spartans, but second year Squirt players Natasha and Teresa impressed all their teammates and coaches this year.  Natasha excelled at all the positions she was asked to play.  She displayed perfect form while pitching and snagged balls out of the air with her quick glove earning her an MVP award.  Teresa worked hard on her pitches during the March pitching clinics and that came through as she became one of the top pitchers on our team combining speed and accuracy.

Moving up from Mite to the Squirt level is big step, but Anika, Arthi and Charlotte accepted the challenge during practices, they learned to love the warm ups and worked hard while they were constantly pushed.  Arthi was constantly positive, smiling and even keeled while Charlotte displayed a deeper knowledge of the game and had some key hits and catches during the OSSTA championship.

New to Select, Emily and Huayin learned to focus and maintain their concentration even when the play seemed to be away from them, as fast pitch is a speed game. Both made progress and stopped some hard hit shots into outfield.

We were fortunate to have some substitutes play for us as well.  Cassidy displayed her knowledge of the game as she constantly called out where the plays were while on defense.  Hannah may have been the catalyst for the team becoming more vocal in support of each other through her infectious enthusiasm.  Samantha was always a threat in Select and house league to get a hit.  Sevoya complimented her teammates by playing an all around solid game.
