SPARTANS FAQ
It’s tryouts season and Unionville Minor Softball recognizes that not everybody might know about our select program. So here’s a quick crash course on what you need to know!
Q: What is Spartans Select?
A: Our Spartans Select program is more competitive play. Players will have weekly practices and compete in 1 day weekend tournaments around the GTA (With the exception of our 2 day provincial championships). Players must attend tryouts to be eligible for the team.
Q: Do I have to play house league?
A: YES ALL SPARTANS PLAYERS MUST PLAY ON THEIR HOUSELEAGUE TEAM IN ADDITION TO THEIR SELECT TEAM. YOU MUST BE A REGISTERED UMSA PLAYER TO TRY OUT.
Q: Is there a cost?
A: Spartans select is an additional fee to cover the cost of tryouts, uniforms, equipment and tournament fees.
Q: How do I join?
A: Keep a watch out for tryout announcements in your division! Spartans tryouts can only occur once we have a select coach in place for that division (see below). Once tryouts have been announced you MUST attend at least 2-3 (depending on the division) of the tryouts.
Q: Who picks the teams?
A: The coaches will evaluate players during tryouts. Please note that no Spartans team is picked until ALL tryouts are complete. The tryouts are open, meaning no child is guaranteed a spot whether or not they’ve been on the team in the past. That means new players are ALWAYS encouraged to join and ALWAYS given a fair shot at the team. Whether you’re new or returning we hope to see you at the tryouts!
UMSA’s select program is a great way to build your skills and form lasting friendships. Learn important life skills such as teamwork, sportsmanship, and leadership and have fun doing it!

IN ORDER TO HAVE SPARTAN TEAMS, WE NEED TO HAVE SPARTAN COACHES. We are still looking for Spartans Select head coaches in the following divisions:
- Mite Girls (2009-2010)
- Mite Boys (2009-2010)
- Peewee Boys(2005-2006)

Remember for Tryouts:
No UMSA SPARTANS apparel may be worn
Bring glove, proper footwear (CLOSED TOED) and clothing
Bring a labelled water bottle
Be prepared to workout
Good attitude
Parents may be asked to assist during tryouts as coaches evaluate players
