SPARTANS Mite Boys
UMSA 2014 SPARTANS MITE BOYS
The Mite Boys had a fun season during the summer of 2014. There were lots of exciting games, great plays, laughter, and new friendships.
Our first tournament was held at a great facility in Bracebridge on June 28. Game 1 was a 10-3 victory over Souffville. Lucas’s pitching dominated with 8 strikeouts and Ryan scored 3 runs. Game 2 was a loss to Georgian Bay and Game 3 was a well played but one-run loss to the hosts. Lucas and Joshua made it to the final round of the “Golden Glove” skills competition, with Joshua bringing home the trophy (the second-straight year it was won by a Spartan!).
The Spartans hosted their own Unionville tournament on a beautiful July 12th. The boys started fast but lost a close 11-10 decision to Bradford – despite some big hits from Eric and Cooper. Game 2 was a loss to Bracebridge but we rebounded with a 20-10 thumping of Stouffville in Game 3 thanks to homer runs from Eric and Charlie. Charlie also pitched two hitless innings. That win pushed the Spartans into the consolation final against Topham Park, who pulled away with an 18-6 win.
July 26 saw the boys travelling to the Woodbridge tournament. Game 1 featured a 12-7 victory over Grimsby thanks to great pitching from Charlie and home runs hit by Lucas and Jason. Game 2 was our most exciting game of the year, as the boys came from a 7-run deficit to pull out a 12-9 win over Bramalea. Ryan led the attack with three runs. After a close loss to the hosts, we found ourselves in the tournament final against our rivals from Bracebridge. Despite playing a fourth game in a long, hot day, the Spartans tried hard but just couldn’t get the bats going. Second place still felt pretty good though!
August 9 featured a trip down the QEW to Grimsby. We were a bit sleepy during a Game 1 loss to Topham Park – although Jaden was wide awake and provided some big hits. During a Game 2 loss we faced some incredible pitching from the Niagara team but then came close to beating Jordan in Game 3 thanks to 5 combined hits from Joshua and Ryan.
Our final tournament was the provincials held in Georgian Bay on August 16. It was a very wet day that featured a tie in our second game, and then the skies opened up. The rest of the day was washed out but not before the Spartans proudly marched in a parade with the other teams during noon-hour ceremonies. It was a great way to end the season!
On behalf of Coach Rick, we’d like to thanks the players, parents and fans everywhere for making the summer of 2014 such a fun time. Have a great winter and we’ll see everyone on the diamonds in 2015!
